St. Augustine Prep Students Serve Sacred Heart School in Camden

Twenty-eight St. Augustine Preparatory School students recently spent one of the final days of their summer vacation serving the Camden community by helping Sacred Heart School prepare for the start of a new academic year.

The service opportunity developed following the closure of Holy Name School in North Camden, which had served students and families for 99 years. Sacred Heart School, located in the Waterfront South section of Camden, contacted the St. Augustine Prep Office of Mission and Ministry for assistance moving desks, furniture and other equipment.

Despite the summer heat, 28 Hermits volunteered to travel to Camden and spend the day moving two truckloads of furniture and school equipment to Sacred Heart.

The students’ efforts helped the Sacred Heart community prepare its facilities to welcome students for the new school year. Sacred Heart Principal Elizabeth Mariani expressed her gratitude for the hard work and generosity demonstrated by the young men of St. Augustine Prep.

Service is an important part of the student experience at St. Augustine Prep and reflects the school’s Augustinian values, including Caritas—the call to selfless love and care for others.

Through opportunities like this, students put servant leadership into action while strengthening relationships with communities and organizations throughout South Jersey.
