St. Augustine Prep 8th Graders Embrace Servant Leadership Through Community Outreach in Vineland

At St. Augustine Prep, the formation of young men extends far beyond the classroom. Rooted in the Augustinian values of truth, unity, and love, Prep students are continually encouraged to lead through service — learning firsthand what it means to care for others with humility, compassion, and dignity.

That spirit was once again on display as members of the Prep’s 8th grade class volunteered with Spirit and Truth Ministries during one of the ministry’s community barbeques serving the poor and needy throughout the Vineland area.

Held several times throughout the warmer months, the outreach events provide more than just a meal. Alongside a delicious assortment of barbeque food, guests are welcomed to browse free clothing tables while also connecting with valuable community resources, including haircuts, health screenings, substance addiction counseling, and shelter placement assistance.

For the Prep’s 8th grade students, participation in these events has become a meaningful tradition centered on servant leadership and brotherhood in action.

Arriving early in the morning, the young men worked together to set up tables, chairs, and tents before guests arrived. Once the event was underway, the students warmly greeted attendees and assisted them with their immediate needs by distributing hygiene and grooming products, as well as new socks and underwear in a variety of sizes.

Moving quickly from table to table, the students carried themselves with kindness, attentiveness, and respect — creating moments of genuine human connection throughout the day. In return, guests expressed heartfelt gratitude for the hospitality and care shown by the Prep students.

Experiences like these are an important part of the journey for young Hermits as they prepare to join the high school ranks at St. Augustine Prep. Service is not viewed as an obligation, but as an essential part of personal growth and leadership development. Through opportunities to serve others, students come to understand that true leadership is grounded in humility, empathy, and a willingness to put others' needs before their own.

As these young men continue their journey at the Prep, moments like this help shape them into leaders who are not only academically prepared but also formed in brotherhood and called to serve their communities with compassion and purpose.
