Johns Hopkins Leader Dr. Patrick Brugh Inspires Students Through Veritas Speaker Series

St. Augustine Preparatory School recently welcomed Dr. Patrick Brugh, Director of the Life Design Center at Johns Hopkins University, as part of the Prep’s ongoing Veritas Speaker Series, bringing another dynamic voice to campus focused on leadership, innovation, and purpose-driven education.

Dr. Brugh spent the day engaging students and faculty in hands-on learning experiences that reflected the Prep’s commitment to experiential learning, college preparation, and the development of thoughtful young leaders ready to make an impact on the world.

Designing Purpose-Driven Futures

In his presentation to students, Dr. Brugh explored how intentional career design, creativity, and reflection help shape meaningful futures. His message resonated strongly with our Hermits, challenging them to think beyond traditional academic pathways and instead consider how their interests, talents, and values intersect.

Student leaders later joined Dr. Brugh for a small-group lunch discussion, where the conversation centered on innovation initiatives at the Prep, leadership development, and how emerging programs continue to expand opportunities for real-world learning. The exchange highlighted the kind of intellectual curiosity and engagement that define the St. Augustine Prep experience.

Innovation in Action: Design Thinking Workshops

Earlier in the day, seniors participated in a collaborative game design workshop rooted in design thinking principles. Working in teams with simple materials and guided prompts, students moved through a creative process of discovery, development, testing, and iteration.

What may have looked like playful experimentation was actually deep learning in motion. Students brainstormed freely, tested ideas quickly, and learned how feedback — both positive and critical — refines innovation. The session reflected the Prep’s broader educational philosophy: that authentic learning often happens when students actively create, collaborate, and take intellectual risks.

Professional Development for Faculty & Staff

Dr. Brugh also led a professional development session for faculty and staff focused on human-centered design and innovative teaching approaches. The workshop encouraged our Hermit educators to remain flexible, curious, and responsive to student needs — qualities that are essential in today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape.

Faculty members explored how design thinking can enhance classroom engagement, foster creativity, and better prepare students for college, careers, and lifelong learning.

Living Veritas Through Real-World Engagement

The Veritas Speaker Series continues to connect St. Augustine Prep students with accomplished leaders from higher education, business, medicine, and more. These connections provide valuable exposure to diverse career paths while reinforcing the school’s Augustinian values of Veritas (Truth), Unitas (Unity), and Caritas (Love).

Programs like this underscore the Prep’s commitment to forming young men who are not only academically prepared but also reflective, innovative, and ready to contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Dr. Brugh’s visit was a powerful reminder that education is most impactful when it bridges theory and practice — when students see how ideas translate into action and purpose.

As St. Augustine Prep continues expanding opportunities through the Innovation, Experiential Learning, and Entrepreneurship program, the Veritas Speaker Series remains an important part of preparing the Hermit Brotherhood for success in college, career, and life.
