Hermits Alumni Mark Bryson ’89 and Brad Kingett ’05 Return to Inspire Students Through Veritas Speaker Series

St. Augustine Preparatory School welcomed two distinguished alumni back to campus on Friday, May 1, as part of the Veritas Speaker Series, offering students a powerful look at how passion, perseverance, and purpose can shape a meaningful life.

Mark Bryson ’89 and Brad Kingett ’05 spent the day engaging with their Hermit Brothers across multiple classes before addressing the school community in the Innovation Center. Their visit provided not only inspiration, but a tangible connection between the Hermit Brotherhood and life beyond the Prep.

A Life Built on Passion and Purpose

A proud member of the Class of 1989, Mark Bryson’s journey reflects the impact of relationships, mentorship, and staying true to one’s calling. After his time in Richland’s “Proud and Peaceful Glen,” Bryson attended the University of Miami before carving out a career in the sports industry, working alongside leaders and Hall of Famers across the NBA, NHL, NFL, and NCAA.

Bryson played a role in some of the most recognizable events in professional sports, including NBA All-Star Jam Sessions, MLB All-Star FanFest, and the NHL Winter Classic at Citizens Bank Park. Yet, his message to students centered less on accolades and more on consistency, discipline, and character.

Reflecting on a moment that stayed with him, Bryson shared wisdom passed down from baseball legend Willie Mays: “It’s easy to be great once in a while, but it’s hard to be great every day.” That idea—showing up and committing to being great every day—resonated deeply with students.

Today, Bryson channels his passion into writing a series of sports-themed children’s books and working with the David Ortiz and Mariano Rivera Foundations to promote literacy. His mission is simple and clear: to make kids smile through sports.

Embracing Creativity and Authenticity

Brad Kingett ’05 offered a unique and meaningful perspective rooted in authenticity and creative pursuit. After graduating from the Prep, Kingett attended Saint Joseph’s University and spent several years living with fellow Prep alumni, further strengthening the bonds of brotherhood beyond campus.

His professional journey included a variety of roles, but a consistent desire remained—to create. Whether through writing or illustration, Kingett sought ways to express his ideas before ultimately committing fully to his passion.

That pursuit led to the creation of his book, Born a Philly Sports Fan, inspired by his own experiences and his desire to share the culture and identity of Philadelphia sports with his children. The book reflects not only fandom, but family, storytelling, and the traditions that connect generations.

Kingett encouraged his Hermit Brothers to lean into who they are, embrace creativity, and not be afraid to take risks in pursuing what they love.

A Day of Connection and Brotherhood

Beyond their formal presentations, both Bryson and Kingett spent time visiting classrooms and engaging directly with students and faculty, creating meaningful, personal interactions throughout the day.

Their presence on campus served as a reminder of the lasting impact of a St. Augustine Prep education—and the many paths that begin in Richland.

As members of the Hermit Brotherhood, Bryson and Kingett exemplify what it means to carry forward the values of Veritas, Unitas, and Caritas, using their gifts to make an impact in their respective fields.

The Veritas Speaker Series continues to bring these stories to life, connecting current students with alumni who have forged their own paths while remaining rooted in the lessons learned at the Prep.
