Entrepreneur Anthony Mento P'26 Shares Lessons in Leadership and Perseverance at St. Augustine Prep

At St. Augustine Prep, the Innovation, Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship program continues to connect students with leaders who embody the values of truth, unity, and love—not just in theory, but in practice. As a leading Catholic, Augustinian college preparatory school in South Jersey, the Prep remains committed to forming young men through experiences that bridge academic learning with real-world insight. That mission was on full display thanks to the student-driven C-Suite Experience, bringing entrepreneur and current parent Anthony Mento P’26, founder of Life Brokerage LLC, to campus. Mr. Mento addressed students with a message rooted in perseverance and long-term personal and professional growth. Speaking in the Innovation Center to an audience that included his son, senior AJ Mento ’26, he offered more than a traditional business talk—delivering a candid and deeply personal reflection on the realities of building a career and, more importantly, building genuine character.

Mr. Mento challenged students to think critically about who they are becoming long before titles, careers, or success enter the picture.

“You are already becoming somebody,” he shared. “Every decision you make is a brick.”

Drawing from his own experience, he spoke openly about missed opportunities early in his academic journey and the long-term consequences of not taking foundational learning seriously. His message was clear: the habits formed today—inside and outside the classroom—shape the trajectory of tomorrow. For students engaged in the Prep’s Innovation, Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship Program, the lesson carried added significance. As the program continues to offer opportunities in business, leadership, and hands-on learning, Mr. Mento’s message reinforced a core principle: meaningful success is built on discipline, preparation, and intentional growth—not shortcuts.

Reflecting on his early career, Mr. Mento described the turning point that shifted his mindset: a commitment to mastering his craft. Rather than simply selling a product, he learned to solve problems—an approach that ultimately transformed his career in the life insurance industry. His advice to students was both practical and aligned with the real-world application emphasized at the Prep: become indispensable through knowledge, focus on solving problems rather than selling, and prepare relentlessly so that when opportunity comes, you are ready. That preparation paid off in a pivotal moment early in his career—a single phone call that opened the door to working with high-level clients and reshaped his professional path. What may have appeared as luck was, in reality, the result of preparation meeting opportunity.

One of the most impactful moments of the presentation came as Mr. Mento detailed the launch of his company under extraordinarily difficult circumstances. At 36 years old, with a young family, mounting financial uncertainty, and personal challenges, he decided to build something of his own—starting from a basement with limited resources and no guarantees. His message to students considering careers in business, entrepreneurship, or leadership was grounded in honesty: there is no shortcut to success. This is where you are tested. Through that experience, he introduced a principle that closely aligns with the goals of the Prep’s Innovation, Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship Program—the importance of investing in yourself. Not through trends or quick wins, but through discipline, sacrifice, and a willingness to embrace pressure as a tool for growth. As he shared, pressure is supposed to sharpen you—not soften you.

Beyond business strategy, Mento emphasized a principle that transcends industries and speaks directly to the formation of young men at St. Augustine Prep: the value of reputation. In one of the most powerful moments of the afternoon, he shared how he chose to repay debts he was not legally responsible for—at significant personal cost—because it was the right thing to do. That decision continues to define his relationships and success years later. As he put it, reputation compounds faster than money, and it must be protected accordingly. It was a message that reflects the values of the Hermit Brotherhood, where character is developed not only in defining moments but in daily decisions.

While Mr. Mento’s experience as a founder and entrepreneur provided valuable insight into the realities of building a business, his closing message centered on something deeper. Success is not defined solely by outcomes, but by the person you become in the process.

Through the Innovation, Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship program and the student-driven C-Suite Experience, St. Augustine Preparatory School continues to provide students with meaningful exposure to leaders who challenge, inspire, and prepare them for life beyond the classroom. Experiences like this reinforce the Prep’s commitment to developing thoughtful, disciplined, and purpose-driven young men—ready to lead in college, career, and life.
