Engineering the Future: Real-World Innovation Comes to Life at St. Augustine Prep

At St. Augustine Preparatory School, innovation isn’t confined to a classroom—it’s experienced.

Students in the Prep’s Innovation, Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship (IEE) program recently participated in a hands-on engineering workshop that challenged them to think critically, collaborate effectively, and engage with real-world problems shaping the future of transportation.

Led by Prep alumnus Scott Brosman '10 and professionals from MASITE, the multi-day experience immersed students in the evolving world of transportation trends and technologies—from autonomous vehicles to smart city infrastructure.

From Research to Real-World Application

Working in teams, students were tasked with researching a transportation innovation and developing a solution-driven presentation. The project required them to not only understand the technology, but to evaluate its broader impact across multiple dimensions—including safety, efficiency, environmental considerations, cost, and accessibility.

As outlined in the workshop framework, students were expected to clearly explain their topic, assess the advantages and challenges, and communicate why their innovation matters in today’s world.

This approach reflects a core principle of the IEE program: learning by doing.

Rather than passively absorbing information, students actively engaged in:
    •    Collaborative problem-solving
    •    Research and analysis of emerging technologies
    •    Public speaking and presentation development
    •    Critical evaluation of real-world systems

Learning from Industry Professionals

A defining element of the experience was the direct connection to industry.

Through their work with MASITE, students gained insight into the field of transportation engineering, including the diverse career pathways available—from planning and design to construction and infrastructure innovation.

Exposure to professionals in the field helped students understand not just what they were learning, but why it matters.

This type of engagement is a hallmark of experiential learning at the Prep—bridging the gap between academic concepts and professional application.

Building Skills That Extend Beyond the Classroom

The workshop culminated in team presentations, where students were challenged to present and “sell” their ideas to an audience—an exercise that required both technical understanding and effective communication.

Beyond engineering concepts, students developed essential skills that will serve them well in any field:
    •    Confidence in presenting ideas
    •    Team collaboration and leadership
    •    Analytical thinking and decision-making
    •    Adaptability in solving complex problems

These are the same skills demanded by today’s most innovative industries.

The IEE Advantage at St. Augustine Prep

Programs like this exemplify the strength of the Prep’s Innovation, Experiential Learning & Entrepreneurship (IEE) initiative—an approach designed to prepare students not just for college, but for meaningful careers and leadership roles.

By integrating real-world experiences, industry partnerships, and hands-on learning opportunities, St. Augustine Prep continues to position its students at the forefront of STEAM education in New Jersey.
